I think I can speak for everyone when I say we have all struggled with writer’s block. Just writing this blog post, I stopped at least ten times because I couldn’t find the right words to say. What can I say, writer’s block sucks! What can we do to stop it? Well, to be completely honest, I couldn’t tell you. I constantly struggle with it and no matter what I try, nothing really helps me with my writer’s block. I’m the type of person who can’t write or read in pure silence. I get distracted too easily in silence. So, in the past I’ve tried writing with music or even while watching TV, but I still freeze up. I’ve even done outlines and I still manage to freeze up! It baffles me that in college, when I would write research papers I could get them done in a matter of hours. I would just put the movie Deadpool in the Blu-ray player and maybe two hours later I would have a well written research paper. I know, I just finished saying that music and TV doesn’t help, but I think my priorities were different. I either was anxious to watch Deadpool or maybe the “Merc with a Mouth” triggered something in my brain that helped me focus enough to finish my assignment. I feel when I write for myself it is much more difficult than writing professionally (school or work). Ever since I was little I have always loved writing. It seems when I was younger, writing was a lot easier for me. Probably because when I was younger, I didn’t have critics telling me that my writing wasn’t good enough. When I went to high school and college, the joy I experienced when writing slowly faded. I think it had a lot to do with the constant disapproval from my peers and professors. I always feared that my writing wasn’t good enough until one of my college instructors (she is now a dear friend), reassured me that my writing was good, and to not let the editorial process blind me of one of my passions. I won’t lie, I still fear at times that my writing could be better, but I’ve gotten better at caring less about what critics have to say. I write for myself. If you don’t like what I have to say, don’t read it. Now, I know this post is about writer’s block, but if you think about it I hit the topic pretty well. When you fear what people will think it messes with your creativity. Without creativity, you tend to freeze up. I can’t tell you how to completely suppress writer’s block, but my best advice is to not fear what others have to say. Maybe if you stop caring about the critics your creativity will flow and potentially stop the writer’s block. Write for yourself, and don’t be afraid to express your musings to the world.
