I’m working on changing my outlook on life from mostly negative to positive. I’m doing this with the help of my therapist and support system. Danielle gave me a simple exercise to try. It is simply change one word in my vocabulary. Instead of saying “I have to do something.” I say, “I get to do something.” Sounds cheesy right? Well, cheesy or not, it works! Just changing the word from “have” to “get” in sentences makes the sentence sound more positive. Don’t believe me? Try it! Here is an example from my life: I have to go to Rio Rancho, then Bernalillo. It sounds negative right? How about this, I get to go to Rio Rancho then Bernalillo. Doesn’t it sound better? If you said no, stop reading now, I don’t need your negativity in my life. Now, since all the negative people are gone let me continue this post. Along with changing how I speak, I am also taking other negative aspects out of my life. Apart from people at work, I am taking out negative people from my life. I’m also continuing the positive things throughout my day journal. I’ve also started being more mindful of my negative thoughts. When I feel a negative thought coming on, I have a few mantras I say to myself and it usually helps stop the thought. Since I started reading Miracles Now, I’ve gotten into meditating. I’m still a little uncomfortable with meditating, but I feel with more practice it will become more natural to me. I’ve thought about going to Yoga and Meditation classes, but I don’t really feel comfortable going to those classes by myself. I would much rather do meditation in therapy and on my own. Maybe one day I will have the self-confidence to go to a Yoga and Meditation class, but for now, I am ok doing things on my own. I need to remember to take care of myself and my mental health. I focus so much on taking care of others I forget about number one, ME! Yes, it is ok to care about others but I take it to the point where I'm so stressed about everyone else it really affects my mental health. Changing my negative mindset by learning more ways to change it is helping me on my journey to happiness. Day by day I am getting closer to my goal, and I look forward to the light at the end of the tunnel. Never give up, and always remember to love yourself.
